If you need a quick break from the city, Dajti Mountain is the easiest win. It’s right behind Tirana, yet somehow feels worlds away.
You hop on the Dajti Ekspres cable car and in fifteen minutes, you’re gliding over pine forests and rooftops until the whole capital spreads out beneath you. It’s one of the easiest things to do near Tirana when you need a nature break and a dose of fresh air.
The first time I went, I completely messed up the timing. I reached the cable car just as it stopped for a midday break, lesson learned! But that extra hour waiting for it to reopen turned out perfect: I grabbed coffee at the base café, chatted with locals, and watched families heading up for picnics. It reminded me why Albanians treat weekends like mini-adventures.
Once on top, you’ll find walking trails, paragliding spots, a viewpoint restaurant, and horses grazing lazily in summer. It’s the kind of place where you can breathe again after the buzz of Skanderbeg Square.

2. Bovilla Lake & Gamti Mountain: Epic Views Without the Crowds
If you’ve seen that photo of a turquoise lake surrounded by ridges, that’s Bovilla. And yes, it looks just as unreal in person.
It’s one of Albania’s most underrated natural spots, and unbelievably close to Tirana. Yet, so few travelers make it here.
Confession: I didn’t go the first time I was home and I regret it. Every local friend told me, “You haven’t seen Bovilla yet?” – and they were right. The views from the Gamti trail look straight out of a national park in Montenegro or Switzerland, but without the crowds.
It’s perfect for anyone craving a short hike or picnic with a view. The road is bumpy, but totally doable with a regular car or by joining a small guided hike.

3. Kruja: History and Handicrafts in a Hillside Town
If you only have time for one historical day trip, make it Kruja.
Perched on a hill north of Tirana, it’s the birthplace of Albania’s national hero, Skanderbeg, the same man whose statue stands in Tirana’s main square. Visiting his castle here gives context to everything you’ll see in the capital.
But Kruja isn’t just about history. The old bazaar feels like stepping back centuries, with cobblestone streets and wooden shops overflowing with handwoven rugs, copperware, and carved souvenirs. I still have a tiny filigree bracelet I bought there years ago, my first ever “souvenir with meaning.”
Go early if you want to see the shops before crowds, and don’t be afraid to haggle gently, it’s part of the experience.

4. Komani Lake & Lumi i Shales: Albania’s Fjord Fantasy
This one is a long day, but absolutely worth every minute.
Komani Lake feels like a slice of Norway dropped into northern Albania. You’ll sail between steep green cliffs, through tunnels of mist, and then arrive at Lumi i Shales, a hidden river beach where the water is so clear it looks fake.
The boat ride itself is what dreams are made of. I’ve taken ferries all over the world, but this one still ranks among the most beautiful. It’s a bit of a mission from Tirana (expect a 12-hour round trip), but tours make it seamless.
Once you arrive, you can swim, relax at the small wooden restaurant by the river, or just watch the mountains reflect in the glassy water. On my tour, the captain even stopped mid-lake for a swim, the water was icy, but everyone laughed and cheered. It felt like the most spontaneous moment of the whole trip. It’s the kind of place that makes you forget you’re just a few hours from the capital.

5. Durrës: Roman Ruins by the Beach

I always stop for a byrek and ayran at a tiny bakery just off the amphitheater, it’s nothing fancy, but the smell of fresh dough mixed with sea air is pure Albanian summer.
Whenever I don’t have time to go all the way south to Ksamil, Durrës is my go-to. It’s the perfect low-effort escape when I need sea air without the long drive.

If Albania had a fairytale town, it would be Berat.
Built along the Osum River and crowned by a castle that still has families living inside, this UNESCO city feels timeless. White Ottoman houses tumble down the hill, their windows catching every bit of light, which is why locals call it “the city of a thousand windows.”
Berat is one of those places that instantly slows you down. I always recommend staying overnight if you can, but even as a day trip from Tirana, it’s unforgettable.
And if you go, promise me you’ll eat at Homemade Food Lili. It’s one of those tiny, family-run restaurants that remind you why Albanian hospitality is legendary, and yes, Lili will probably insist you try his raki before you leave.

In Pristina, the street murals about independence hit hard, especially knowing how recent that history is. Then two hours later, I was sipping Turkish coffee in Prizren’s Old Bazaar watching kids play by the river, such a striking contrast in one tiny country.”
