You’ve heard about the Theth to Valbona hike, but you’re unsure which way to go, or if one village is better than the other.
You’re not alone. This 17-km trail through the Albanian Alps hiking region is one of the most spectacular hikes in the Balkans, but every traveler eventually faces the same question:
👉 Do I hike from Theth to Valbona, or Valbona to Theth?
I’ve done the hike myself, backpack strapped, camera dangling, and way too many snacks, and I learned that the direction you choose shapes your entire experience.
In this post, I’ll break down both routes of the Theth to Valbona trail, what to expect in each village, and all the logistical tips you need for 2025, from transport and difficulty to where to stay and what time of year gives you the best views.

Theth vs Valbona Hike: Which Direction Is Best?
I still remember standing in Shkodër at dawn, debating which bus to take, one to Theth or one to Valbona. Everyone had a different opinion.
Some swore that hiking from Theth to Valbona was “the classic way,” while others said Valbona to Theth was “easier on the legs.”
Here’s what I found after doing the route myself and talking to locals who’ve guided it for years.
Theth → Valbona: The Classic Route
Best for: First-timers, photographers, and those who want the most scenic climax at the end.
Why it’s popular:
Starting in Theth means beginning your hike surrounded by the dramatic amphitheater of Thethi National Park. You’ll climb gradually to the Valbona Pass, one of the highlights of hiking in Valbona Pass, where the views stretch across Theth National Park and Valbona Valley National Park.
It’s no surprise this is often listed among the best hikes in Albania.
Difficulty: Moderate-to-hard. The climb is steady but rewarding, with about 1,000 m of elevation gain.
If you start early (around 7 AM), you’ll reach the top before the midday sun hits.
Scenery:
- Morning shade while ascending through pine forests and meadows
- The best panoramic views face the Valbona Valley, especially in late morning light
- Wildflowers in June–July, snow patches until early June
Timing & Logistics:
- Take the early minibus from Shkodër to Theth (3 – 3.5 hours)
- Hike to Valbona (6 – 8 hours)
- Spend the night in Valbona
- Next morning: Ferry across Komani Lake + bus back to Shkodër
If Albania’s transport system feels confusing, here’s my guide to getting around Albania using buses, ferries and shared minibuses.
Pros:
Cooler in the morning, less sun exposure on the way up
The most photogenic direction (views open toward Valbona)
Easier onward travel the next day (ferry back to Shkodër)
Cons:
Steeper descent, tougher on knees if you’re carrying a heavy pack
This is more charming, so some prefer to end there instead
Valbona → Theth: The Reverse Route
Best for: Travelers who want a gentler ascent, prefer ending with Theth’s cozy atmosphere, or are coming via the Komani ferry first.
Why people choose it:
If you’re arriving from Tirana or Kosovo, it’s often easier to start in Valbona since the ferry + bus route naturally flows that way.
Many travelers start in Valbona, especially those arriving via the Komani ferry to Valbona, one of Albania’s most scenic routes.
Difficulty: Similar total elevation gain, but the first half is steeper. Most hikers find it slightly harder on the lungs but easier on the knees because the descent into Theth is more gradual.
Scenery:
- Morning views over the Valbona Valley are stunning, especially in early autumn
- The trail is more exposed to the sun, bring a hat and plenty of water
- The descent into Theth reveals the green valleys of Theth National Park, dotted with waterfalls and traditional stone houses.
Timing & Logistics:
- Day 1: Shkodër → Komani Ferry → Fierza → Valbona
- Day 2: Hike Valbona → Theth (6–8 hours)
- Day 3: Minibus from Theth back to Shkodër
Pros:
Easier transport if coming from Tirana or Kosovo
Ends in Theth, which has more cafés, guesthouses, and sights (Grunas Waterfall, Blue Eye)
Feels like a “grand finale” to the Alps
Cons:
A hotter climb, most of the ascent happens in open terrain
You’ll share the trail with hikers coming the other way

Weather, Sun & Trail Conditions
| Season | What to Expect | Trail Conditions | My Recommendation |
| May – June | Melting snow near the pass, wildflowers in bloom | Occasional snow patches in early June | Ideal if you start from Theth (safer descent side) |
| July – August | Warm, dry, long daylight | Trail fully open, can be dusty | Start early (6 AM) from either direction |
| September – October | Crisp air, golden valleys, fewer crowds | Excellent visibility | Best for photography, Valbona → Theth shines |
| November – April | Snow and closed passes | Only guided hikes with crampons | Not recommended without experience |
Not sure which month to visit? I break down the best time to visit Albania season by season, including when you’ll find the clearest mountain views.
What Makes Theth Special: Atmosphere, Sights & Vibe
When I first arrived in Theth, I remember the moment clearly, our van climbed the final bend, and suddenly the whole valley opened up like a painting: a cluster of stone houses surrounded by snow-capped peaks. It felt untouched, almost frozen in time.
I’d seen photos of Theth before, but none prepared me for how alive it feels in person, goats crossing the road, smoke curling from chimneys, kids playing barefoot near the river.
Highlights you shouldn’t miss:
- The Church of Theth, postcard-perfect, especially at sunrise when the light hits the valley.
- Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër i Thethit), a 2-hour hike from the village center, with icy turquoise water that’s irresistible on hot days.
- The Blood Feud Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit), step inside to hear real stories of Albania’s old Kanun laws and family honor.
Most guesthouses here are family-run, and staying in one means sharing homemade rakia, fresh cheese, and stories with your hosts. There’s little nightlife, no ATMs, and limited Wi-Fi, but that’s part of the charm.
Thethi vibe in a sentence:
Quiet, rustic, and deeply authentic. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, and you end up staying longer than planned.

Why Valbona Feels Like a Secret: Nature, Trails & Tranquility
When I reached Valbona after the hike, everything felt wide open, like the world suddenly expanded.
Thethi is a cozy bowl between cliffs; Valbona is a long, glacial valley with sweeping meadows, pine forests, and peaks glowing orange at sunset.
After hours on the trail, arriving in Valbona feels peaceful. You’ll find wooden lodges scattered along the road, each with balconies overlooking the mountains. There’s no real “center,” just a series of guesthouses connected by trails and meadows.
Highlights worth exploring:
- Valbona Valley National Park trails, short hikes like Rrogam Valley or longer ones to Maja e Rosit for panoramic views.
- Local food, try mountain trout, wild berry jam, and fresh bread baked in clay ovens.
- Eco-lodges, many focus on sustainability and traditional design, perfect if you want nature and comfort combined.
If this is your first visit to the region, my Albanian Alps travel guide covers everything you need to know before you go.
Valbona feels more remote and meditative, ideal if you want quiet mornings, crisp air, and endless horizons. There’s less to “do” than in Theth, but more space to breathe.
Valbona vibe in a sentence:
Secluded, scenic, and serene, a valley that feels like it belongs to nature, not to tourists.
Logistics Showdown: Which Village is Easier to Reach?
If there’s one thing I learned planning my hike, it’s that choosing your direction often comes down to transport logistics. Albania’s Alps are stunning, but getting there takes a bit of coordination.
Getting to Theth
I started from Shkodër, the main base for both directions.
The road to Theth used to be infamous, unpaved, full of hairpins, and unpredictable. But as of 2025, the route from Shkodër to Theth is fully paved, making it much easier.
- Travel time: ~3–3.5 hours
- Minibus: €12–15 per person (book a day ahead)
- Private car: around €80–100 round trip
- Tip: Go early morning (6–7 AM) to avoid afternoon clouds over the pass
Once in Theth, everything is walkable or within short hikes; you won’t need transport until you continue toward Valbona.
This route also fits perfectly into a 10-day Albania road trip if you’re planning to explore more of the country.
Getting to Valbona
Reaching Valbona involves a series of connections, vans, the Komani ferry to Valbona, and winding alpine roads through Valbona Valley National Park.
It’s beautiful but requires multiple connections:
- Shkodër → Koman (van, ~2 hours)
- Koman → Fierza (ferry, ~2.5 hours)
- Fierza → Valbona (minibus, ~1 hour)
It’s an adventure, part of the reason many travelers start in Valbona first. You can sit on the ferry deck, drink Turkish coffee, and watch mountain reflections glide by.
- Total travel time: 6–7 hours from Shkodër
- Cost: Around €25 total (van + ferry + transfer)
- Tip: Book ferry tickets in advance on Berisha Ferry or Rozafa Ferry, especially in July–August
If you’re flying in from abroad, my guide to getting to Albania explains the easiest airports, ferry routes and border crossings.
Transport Stress Level:
- Theth → easier, direct road.
- Valbona → longer journey but far more scenic.
If you’re short on time, start in Theth.
If you want the full mountain–ferry–village adventure, start in Valbona.
Whichever route you choose, this remains one of the best hikes in Albania, remote, rewarding, and surprisingly accessible.

Best Direction Based on Your Travel Style
On the trail, I met all kinds of hikers: a German family with two kids, a solo backpacker from Japan, a couple from Italy chasing the sunrise, and even a group of photographers carrying drones and tripods.
Everyone had a different opinion about the Theth vs Valbona hike, and honestly, they were all right—it depends entirely on your travel style.
| Traveler Type | Best Direction | Why It Works | Possible Downsides |
| Families | Theth → Valbona | Gradual morning climb, cooler temperatures, easier transport back via ferry | Long day for kids (6 – 8 hours) |
| Solo Travelers | Valbona → Theth | Easier logistics from Shkodër, end in Theth where it’s easier to socialize | Harder climb in the morning sun |
| Adventure Seekers | Either | Both sides offer steep climbs, river crossings, and wild terrain | Weather-dependent; bring layers |
| Photographers | Theth → Valbona | Best light and views open toward Valbona Valley | Afternoon descent can be harshly lit |
| Slow Travelers | Valbona → Theth | Perfect if you want to unwind at the end, Theth is slower and more walkable | Transport out requires planning |
If you love photographing landscapes, the Theth → Valbona direction will reward you with golden-hour mountain views.
If you prefer ending your journey in a cozy guesthouse by a fireplace, Valbona → Theth might be your perfect match.

Should You Hike Both Ways or Just Once?
Every year, I get messages from travelers asking:
“Is it worth hiking back the next day?”
My honest answer: No, once is enough.
The route is linear, and while the views are stunning, hiking it twice means repeating the same scenery in reverse. You’ll appreciate it more if you do it once, then take the ferry and enjoy a totally different landscape on the way back.
What to Do With Your Luggage
You don’t need to carry everything on your back.
Almost all guesthouses in Shkodër offer free baggage storage, especially if you’ve booked a night there before or after the hike. I left my suitcase safely at Wanderers Hostel, and many travelers use Hotel Tradita or Mi Casa es Tu Casa for the same.
Pack only what you need for 2–3 days: clothes, snacks, a power bank, and water, and let your big bag wait for you.
After the Hike
Most hikers spend a night in Valbona (if hiking from Theth) or in Theth (if hiking the reverse).
You’ll be tired but happy, and waking up in a wooden chalet with mountain air is part of the experience.
If you’re short on time, you can return to Shkodër the next day via the Komani ferry (from Valbona) or direct van (from Theth).

The Verdict – Theth or Valbona?
So, which one wins?
Honestly, neither. The magic is in the contrast.
- Theth feels like a storybook mountain village, compact, cozy, and full of character.
- Valbona feels like the wild north, vast, quiet, and humbling.
But if you’re short on time or trying to decide which way to go:
| If You Want… | Go Theth → Valbona | Go Valbona → Theth |
| Cooler morning hike | ✅ | ❌ |
| Smoother logistics back to Shkodër | ✅ | ❌ |
| Ending in a cozy village | ❌ | ✅ |
| Scenic ferry start | ❌ | ✅ |
| Best panoramic views | ✅ | ✅ (reverse light) |
My personal pick: Theth → Valbona.
It’s the most balanced direction, you climb in the shade, face the grandest views, and finish in Valbona, where you can just sit and absorb the silence. The ferry ride back feels like a reward, not a chore.
Both directions along the Albanian Alps hiking route have their own magic, whether you’re chasing mountain views across Theth National Park or unwinding in the wide meadows of Valbona Valley National Park. Whichever way you go, you’ll experience the same wild ridgelines, rushing streams, and soul-stirring scenery that make this one of the most unforgettable hikes in Albania.
Final Tip
- The full trail usually opens by early June and stays accessible until mid-October.
- Carry cash (no ATMs), offline maps (Maps.me or AllTrails), and trekking poles if you’re not used to steep descents.
- For up-to-date ferry times, guesthouse contacts, and transport schedules, check with your Shkodër accommodation, they’re always in sync with local drivers.
