Day 1: Tirana Arrival + Blloku Exploration
Arrive in Tirana, Albania’s colorful, quirky capital. Drop your bags, stretch your legs, and head to Skanderbeg Square, where Et’hem Bey Mosque and the National History Museum anchor the city’s heart.
Wander through the New Bazaar, splash in a gelato or coffee at one of its tables, then make your way to Blloku. Once a restricted neighborhood under communism, Blloku is now Tirana’s trendiest quarter, full of cafés, bars, and artistic energy.

Day 2: Krujë Day Trip
Just 45 minutes north of Tirana lies Krujë, homeland of the national hero Skanderbeg. Start at the Krujë Castle and museum, then meander through the Old Bazaar, where handwoven rugs and silver jewelry glint under the sun.
One of my fondest travel memories: sitting with an artisan who wove carpets while recounting tales of Albania’s independence. These moments, when history and humanity meet, make Krujë unforgettable.
Day 3: Berat – The City of a Thousand Windows
Drive south toward Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage site where clusters of white Ottoman houses seem to cascade over hillsides above the Osum River.
Stroll through the Mangalem and Gorica quarters, cross the Gorica Bridge, and climb to Berat Castle as golden hour light washes the town.
Where to eat: Homemade Food Lili, family-run, delicious, and they’ll treat you like an old friend.
Day 4: Gjirokastër – The Stone City
Continue to Gjirokastër, Albania’s other UNESCO gem. Explore Gjirokastër Castle, Zekate House, and the Old Bazaar.
I always remember the smell of grilled qofte and mountain herbs drifting through its narrow streets, a scent that marks “you’ve arrived” in Gjirokastër.
Day 5: Optional – Apollonia Ruins or a Glimpse of the Coast
On your way north, stop at Apollonia, the ancient Greek city surrounded by olive groves.
If you’re craving the sea, detour to Vlora for lunch overlooking the Ionian coast, a perfect closing note before flying out.

Day 1: Tirana Highlights
Begin your journey with Tirana’s treasures: Bunk’Art 2, Pazari i Ri’s colorful market, and the Sky Tower Bar for sunset over the city. Let your first evening melt in with rooftop views and local energy.
Day 2: Quick Stop in Berat
Head south and spend a few hours in Berat, just enough to walk the old streets and have lunch by the river. Then continue your drive to the coast.
Day 3: Drive to Dhërmi or Himarë (Albanian Riviera)
Cross the Llogara Pass, where pine forest gives way to sweeping Ionian vistas. That first glimpse of the turquoise sea is always worth the drive.
Once you descend, soak in the coastal air and settle into beach towns like Dhërmi or Himarë.
Day 4: Beach Day + Water Adventures
Choose between Jalë, Livadh, or Dhërmi Beach for swimming, kayaking, or simply seafood and sunsets.
Don’t miss: Gjipe Beach, hidden between red cliffs and accessible only by hike or boat.

Day 6 – Vlora & Llogara Pass
Leave Berat early and drive toward Vlora. Stop for lunch at Kuzum Baba Viewpoint, a local favorite that overlooks the bay. Then continue over the Llogara Pass, one of Albania’s most scenic drives, where pine forests give way to dazzling blue coastline.
Day 7 – Beach Day in Dhërmi or Himarë
Spend your final day swimming, kayaking, or enjoying a seafood lunch at a beachfront taverna. If time allows, hike or take a boat to Gjipe Beach, a secluded gem framed by red cliffs.

Driving in Albania: Tips, Safety & Scenic Detours
Yes, it’s safe to drive in Albania, and often more scenic than expected. Outside Tirana, traffic is light, though drivers can be a little creative with lanes. They’re usually aware of others, but stay alert, especially in villages where animals and kids may wander into the road.
If you’re tackling the mountains, give yourself buffer time. The Llogara Pass, for instance, is stunning but can fog up in the early morning or late afternoon. Aim for clear weather windows and fewer tour buses.
A few more tips:
- Go slow on mountain passes. The views are worth it.
- Fuel stations often accept cash only. Carry Albanian Lek.
- Expect the unexpected. Livestock crossings and random detours are part of the charm.
Language Tips
English is widely spoken by younger Albanians. Italian helps in the south.
